A developable surface can be formed by bending or rolling a planar surface without stretching or tearing (Patrikalakis and Maekawa, 2002) and its main properties are being a ruled surface which feature Gaussian curvature K=0 everywhere (Weisstein, 2019b). While a myriad of possible surfaces respect these conditions, and are actually present in current architecture (Shelden, 2002), the main cases interesting for stereotomy are the plane, cone, cylinder, and orthogonal constant generalized cylinders such as the extruded catenary.
