Tension resistant voussoirs
This signifier includes works where ashlars are required to have a certain degree of tension resistance. A simple example, although not stereotomic, is the usage of one block of stone as an architrave: if it was not for the, although limited, tension resistance of stone, a flat architrave would break. An advantage of this structural kind of voussoirs may be observed back in the Robotically Fabricated Thin-shell Vaulting prototype where the tension resistance is used to hold blocks in place while building the structure, avoiding a centering. Tension resistance within the voussoirs may also contribute in avoiding cracks due to shear stresses, or contribute to the fixation of dowels or clamps.
