Milling (3D carve)
Using a mill to carve material is the direct descendant of the chisel as it allows for a similar workability of the raw material. Although it is bounded by the size of the spindle and the robotic arm that holds it, it eventually outpaces all the aspects of the chisel. The 5-axis CNC was the first digital fabrication tool used to research on stereotomy during the digital revolution (Fallacara, 2003a).
The usage of a mill hints on the possibility to fabricate any kind of surface, from planar to anticlastic double curvature. Although it is technically true, this possibility comes with a time cost, greatly expanded if using a 3-axis CNC instead of 5-axis.
