Subtractive
Subtractive processes are all those which remove a part of a basic material in order to obtain the desired shape. This removal might produce granules or dust in the case of abrasive processes such as milling or sawing, or fumes in the case of burning through laser or hotwire. A few exceptions do not experience removal of material, such as blade cutting. In any of these cases, there is another kind of waste which is the unwanted part of the material after cutting.
Subtraction processes are subdivided in three groups, according to the geometric nature of the removal of material: 2D cut, 3D cut, and 3D carve.
