Regular
Regular patterns are those based in the euclidian tilings, namely the square tiling, the triangular tiling and the hexagonal tiling. In the case of stereotomic configurations of constant profile, as already discussed above, the generatrix and directrix may be used to generate patterns in the surface which naturally display its nature. This is most used and evident in classic stereotomy, as can bee seen in the chapel of Onze Mil Virgens in Álcacer do Sal, where what seems like a radial pattern may also be understood as a spherical wrapping of a cartesian grid. This grid may be used to project other know efficient tessellations, such as the triangular or hexagonal. Adding to these regular tesselations, these arguably simple patterns can also be used as a base for derivate designs, such as the apparent helicoids in the Chateau d’Anet chapel dome.
