Along lines
Centering morphology is often tightly related to the stereotomic design itself, and highly customized stereotomies are often built over similarly customized centerings. Following an analogous approach to two dimensional curved profiles for simple arches, more complex shapes are traced using also the shape produced by the intersection of a vertical plane with the intrados surface. This is demonstrated (Trevisan, 2011b) in the documenting of Trompe d’Anet, where de l’Orme traces the exact vertical triangular profiles in which each of the voussoirs should rest. The vault of the Hôtel de Ville in Arles, result of a composition of nineteen different surfaces, was also probably built with centerings whose horizontal projections draw straight lines in critical parts of the vault (Fallacara, Resta, et al., 2011).
