2D cut
As its name implies, 2D cutting operations act in a surface realm, in this case a XY plane, meaning that fabrication instructions do not include themselves the third dimension. Materials subject to this kind of processes are usually planar, meaning that they feature two opposite faces parallel to each other. Typical material examples are wood boards, sheet metal or stone slabs; these are cut on a normal direction, that is, the tool is perpendicular to the planar surface so that the cut itself is an extrusion of the tool path as deep as the material is thick.
