Foundation
The foundation of a stereotomic structure deals with the physical relation it establishes with its supporting environment. The pre-existent circumstance is acknowledged by Távora (1962) as a key element that constraints and feeds the design act of an architectonic structure. Not only the circumstance helps to model the object, but also the object provides arguments for the circumstance design. This is true specially in traditional vaulting of vertically walled spaces: not only the walls’ thickness were enlarged according to the thrust (initially empirically) calculated, but also abutments or pilasters were added to the original design, creating a signifying whole ensemble of elements within an architectonic space.
