Specific design
A specific geometry for the springer in opposition to the rest of the voussoirs is usually linked to structural requirements, as can be seen in the Armadillo Vault. However, other inventive uses exist, such as the arch in the Amman citadel entrance hall where the true springer is halfway the arch curve, reducing the need for true voussoirs to only two thirds of the vault. It is also suggested by Arce (2006, p. 199) that these springers would protrude “to offer support to span-reduced centerings” and carved away after de decentering, when not needed anymore.
