Rough – Stereotomy Semantic Classification

Rough

Rough contact surfaces can range from an Ra[1] between 0.1mm and 5mm, producing a stereotomic efficiency relative to the project’s intrinsic characteristics. A small Ra value usually produces a desirable friction in every situation, while a large Ra value might be worthy in the case of a good fit between voussoirs (male female connection), or it might turn out to be undesirable if it reduces the contact surface to a small number of surface peaks. Surface roughness is either directly produced by the fabrication method, or produced by an after process such as sand blasting.

[1] The arithmetic average height parameter is a roughness parameter for general quality control. It is defined as the average absolute deviation of the roughness irregularities from the mean line over one sampling length. (Gadelmawla et al., 2002) )
