Binding
Although sliding forces should not exist in an ideal stereotomic design, other factors such as external horizontal forces should be accounted for. In the event of the voussoir weight not being strong enough to withstand motion, sliding may be prevented using a binding agent such as an adhesive mortar. This binding effect is meant to prevent unexpected events and do not take part in the normal force network of the stereotomic structure; because mortar is a mainly compression resistant material, its lack of tension resistance is prone to fractures.
