Interlock
Contact surface interlock is the geometric feature that allows for the coupling of voussoirs in a specific position. Interlock is usually characterized by some kind of geometric fitting, such as a dovetail, puzzle joint, or notch; notwithstanding the various geometric possibilities, the signifiers within this category refer to the ultimate purpose of the interlock. The mechanical properties of any interlock mechanism eventually leads to more than one effect, lending itself to more than one of the below signifiers.
