Friction
This signifier accounts for friction, understood as the force that opposes the relative sliding motion of two solid voussoirs in contact.
An abstractly ideal stereotomic project would have the normals of all points of contact surfaces aligned with the thrust vectors, resulting in an independence from friction to hold voussoirs together. This idealised scenario would not account for material or fabrication irregularities, errors during assembly, or unexpected forces; which is arguably never the case.
