Planar (Contact Surface)
Planar surfaces are a special case of ruled surfaces and, although these are arguably the easiest to materialize, the design processes that allows for such geometry are not straightforward. Planar faces are needed when the materialisation process involves subtractive saw cutting, planar elements moulds, or simply manual operation of planar cutting machines that lack the necessary accuracy for more complex surfaces. The adoption of planar contact faces is more accessible today because computation power allows for complex parallel calculations that find the planar solution thanks to approximation techniques.
