Chisel and Mallet
Using a chisel to cut away stone is a primordial human action, responsible for sculpted and modelled stones millennia before stereotomy existed. It is the main tool of stone masons (Figure 61), allowing for an amount of geometric and expressive freedom bounded only by the capability of the human worker. This is the materialisation process in which classical stereotomy was built upon, lending itself to all kinds of surfaces and finishes.
