Topological approach
The topological approach of paving departs from the tessellation of a simple surface which is topologically similar to the final surface and admits the mapping of the design from the first UV space (usually designed within XY coordinates) into the UV space of the final surface. Cartography projections (such as azimuthal projections) have been efficient in retro mapping the final earth surface into a simple surface, the map. This strategy may be used to simplify the tessellation task by reducing the dimension space to two dimensions, or to take advantage of a known design and morph (Beier and Neely, 1992) them to curved surfaces. Transformations between flat configurations of three dimensional voussoirs and curved final surfaces are widely discussed by Fallacara (2006) and used as stereotomic strategies.
