Aesthetics – Stereotomy Semantic Classification

Aesthetics

The aesthetics signifier is present when the subdivision is designed so that a particular figurative pattern of motif is intended. Although a certain set of rules should be followed (Fallacara, 2003a; Matthias Rippmann, 2016) to achieve maximum structural stability and avoid slippage of voussoirs, a well bounded stereotomic surface allows for variations within the general subdivision. Figure 91 shows the vault of Chartreuse de Valbonne where the keystone area is occupied by a configuration of sculpted stones in form of a frieze surrounding a star, a “MA” can be found midway to the springers, and the relieve voussoirs are designed in palm shape which, besides its decorative effect, reinforces and idea of and the structure itself by discharging forces in the pilasters; all of these with structurally performative stones.
