Site fixation
The exercise of stereotomy is tightly dependent on a force that brings all voussoirs together and is discharged into a strong pre-existent base. While this base might be the ground itself in the case of a free standing arch or the walls of a church where a complex vault sits, the key characteristic is the resistance to the forces that the stereotomic work exert into it. Besides the obvious resistance to weight which avoids the sinkage of the structure, the main performance required by the base is the resistance to the horizontal forces.
