Tensioned springers
Using tension to hold the springers in place allows for the creation of a somewhat closed system, similar to a roof timber framing with tie-beam. The springers sit in the ground and would be allowed to move freely in the XY plane if not for the condition imposed by the stereotomic structure horizontal thrust and tension tie contrary force. In the case of the Armadillo Vault or Stratus Bridge, the designers had the intent of showing the free space between the vault supports and tension ties were used to overcome the fact that the floor of the exhibition space could not be modified.
