Sustainability
This signifier is related to the sustainability of the processes related to the materials employed in the stereotomic construction. The widespread usage of fossil fuels and mass industrialization starting in the end of the 19th century caused imbalances in the environment and shortages of raw materials. This has sparked a growing conscience on the non-renewable nature of resources (Hotelling, 1931) and a general international acknowledgement of the problem in the United Nations Scientific Conference on the Conservation and Utilization of Resources (Gibboney, 1949).
A focus in reducing the impact on each of the signifiers below characterize their association to a stereotomic design.
